The Slightly Technical ToneX captures are tone models of gear from my personal collection. These amplifiers and pedals are not commercially available and are either original designs, designs inspired by famous units, or uniquely modified pieces of equipment. Each piece of gear was crafted with carefully selected components, meticulously measured, and calibrated to achieve the desired tonal qualities.
The Crusader Overdrive is one of my early FET-based designs, created with the goal of making boring amplifiers less boring. The pedal is designed to cover the range from clean to light breakup sounds, and it allows you to manipulate the midrange frequencies of the signal with the Push control.
The equalizer in this circuit is a rare, old design—simple, but it works wonders, offering a wide palette of sounds that can be covered by a pedal like this. I consider it a utility pedal, as there are times when you simply need something like this. It also sounds amazing when pushed by other pedals.
It’s a high-headroom circuit that breaks up very naturally and features two midrange voicings. There's also the option to lower the headroom for a bit more gain and compression.
This collection includes six different Tone Models. The captures were sampled at settings I consider sweet spots for this pedal. Since it is a utility pedal, the goal was to create models that serve a purpose and solve a problem—details of which are listed in the name and description of the circuit.
